Today in railway history (1836): London Bridge Station is opened by the London and Greenwich Railway. The London and Croydon Railway opened their own separate terminus in 1839, and by 1842 four companies were using the station. A joint station was opened in 1844, but never finished. The South Eastern Railway took over the London and Greenwich station and rebuilt it between 1847 and 1850, and the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway rebuilt and enlarged the unfinished 1844 station, opening it 1853 - this was further enlarged in 1862. The SER station was rebuilt to accommodate through traffic to Charing Cross in 1864. British Rail undertook a major redevelopment of the two stations between 1972 and 1978 (m.youtube/watch?v=V7Qlnu9Gbdw) . Today it is being again redeveloped...
