Today in support of a Okotoks Food Banks Acoustic Christmas show...on a snowy cold winter morning here in Okotoks, Samm Smith performed on the radio 100.9 The Eagle. She sang Imagine by John Lennon. Supporting Samms music comes with difficult decisions sometimes. When it comes to performing in pubs at night or missing school for engagement I stand behind her and go to ever show. Samm is a great student with mastery in half of her grade 8 classes and great grades and she knows that has to happen for music to work. Today with her head held high and her being a proud 13yr old after a great live performance, she asked me for a snow day and with most schools nearly empty because of the weather my response was. How could I say you couldnt make it to class but could make it to the radio station to perform. I compromised with her relentless request in her Samm Smith way....to say no excuses on the snow you could head to school in the afternoon. Support for Samm in our house has alway had two faces and on her arrival at the house after the performance Samm stated she would get in shit because I said she could have the morning off. I replied... at school? She said no at home. This turned out to be the fact and that I apparently show I am a poor father for letting her stay home. Samm to avoid the conflict (from someone she sees and reads much more clearly then I have) walked to school to find no one had made it to her class because of the snow.....Not even the kids of the person (mother) that made her feel she did something wrong. Samm you didnt. Samm I am so proud of you. And Im so disappointed in myself for exposing you to the shallowness of the people I have brought in your life. The people who say, they do, but really dont, who say theyre proud, but are really envious and resentful, who smile to your face and cut you down when your not around. Who have two faces the public one and the one we see. But remember there are people that truly care about you and your music that will go to every show you have, and are there because they love you as a person and not out of default. As I was told again today Im a bad dad, and that maybe true, and that bothers me to think that...but I am a proud dad ..to play music with you and be here in your life to watch you grow into a beautiful young talented lady. I love you.
