Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, January 25th: 1958: Elvis Presleys Jailhouse Rock enters the UK pop charts at Number One, the first single to ever do so in the country. 1963: EMI awards the US record label Vee Jay the right to distribute Beatles records in America. 1967: Jefferson Airplanes Grace Slick and Paul Kantner become the proud parents of a baby girl they name God. (Her name is later changed to China.) 1968: David Gilmour plays his first show with Pink Floyd at Southampton University. He replaces Syd Barrett whose behavior has become increasingly unpredictable. 1971: Charlie Manson and friends are found guilty. This doesn’t have much to do with Rock except the chain of murders was triggered, in Manson’s twisted mind, by The Beatles’ “White Album” and (in particular) the songs “Helter Skelter” and “Piggies.” 1979: Rolling Stone magazine’s Reader’s Poll names The Cars as the year’s best new band. 1980: Paul McCartney is released from a Tokyo jail after nine days. He had been incarcerated after Japanese customs officials found half a pound of marijuana in his luggage. McCartney flies to Amsterdam to meet with his family. 1984: John Lennons widow, Yoko Ono, donates $375,000 to Liverpools Strawberry Field, an orphanage which served as the inspiration for the Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever. 1986: It would have made a great Country song. Bruce Springsteen’s mournful ballad “My Hometown” peaks at #6 on the U.S. charts. 1990: CBS 48 Hours program profiles Paul McCartney. 1991: Paul McCartney appears on MTVs Unplugged. 1999: The Rolling Stones begin their No Security Tour in Oakland, CA. 2003: Billy Joel escapes relatively unharmed when he totals his Mercedes on a highway in his native Long Island, NY. 2006: Mötley Crüe receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The group and 600 fans turn out for the ceremony. Were across the street from the Erotica Museum and Fredericks of Hollywood. The track is also the Most Played Song at Classic Rock Radio and the Most Added song at Mainstream and Active Rock Radio - played on more than 160 stations across the U.S. Tattoo is also heard on the CBS television series CSI. 2013: The Whos Pete Townshend receives the Les Paul Award at the 28th annual Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Awards in Anaheim, CA. The award recognizes people or institutions that have made a significant impact on the world of audio production and technology. 2013: Esquire magazine presents ‘The 10 Craziest Drummers Ever’. Ginger Baker (Cream), Keith Moon (The Who), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Topper Headon (The Clash), Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Josh Freeze (Nine Inch Nails/A Perfect Circle), Bill Ward (Black Sabbath), Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa/Missing Persons) and Vinnie Paul (Pantera) make the list. Releases: 1969: Creedence Clearwater Revival releases their classic “Born On The Bayou” LP. Recording: 1969: The Beatles, Two Of Us, For You Blue, Let It Be Charts: 1964: The Beatles She Loves You enters the pop charts 1969: Creedence Clearwater Revivals Proud Mary enters the charts!
