Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, November 1st: 1945: Bassist Rick Grech is born. Thrust into the spotlight as the least known member of Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker - both ex-Cream) he goes on to join fellow Blind Faith alum Steve Winwood in the second edition of Traffic. 1955: James Brown lays down Please, Please, Please, at radio station WIBB in Macon, GA. 1959: Elvis Presleys current stint in the Army means that for the first time in nearly five years, no Elvis single resides on the Billboard charts. 1962: The Beatles return to the Star Club in Hamburg. Little Richard is also on the bill and teaches Paul (McCartney) his wail (or is it whoooo?) An unauthorized recording of these shows is later released. 1963: The Rolling Stones issue their second single “I Wanna Be Your Man,” written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Ringo sings on The Beatles’ version. 1963: Def Leppard’s Rick Allen enters the world. He starts drumming with his mothers kitchen utensils when he is five. In 84, Allen loses his left arm in an auto accident but learns to drum again using an electric drum kit 1963: The Beatles begin their first headlining UK tour with two shows at the Odeon in Gloucestershire, England, earning 300 pounds a night. Opening acts include The Rhythm and Blues Quartet, The Vernons Girls, Frank Berry, The Brook Brothers, Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, and The Kestrels. The set list: I Saw Her Standing There, From Me To You, All My Loving, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Roll Over Beethoven, Boys, Till There Was You, She Loves You, Money, and Twist And Shout. The full scream of Beatlemania makes it impossible to hear the music, but that doesnt stop girls from camping out for two days in advance for tickets. 1964: Yet another British Invasion band makes its US television debut on CBS Ed Sullivan Show: The Dave Clark Five, whose clean-cut image visibly relieves the host, who is still suffering from the Stones riot of a few days earlier. After the band plays Glad All Over, Ed goes out of his way to tag them as nice, neat boys. 1964: The Beach Boys begin their first UK tour in London. 1965: The Rolling Stones concert in Rochester, NY, ends abruptly when 3,000 rabid fans storm the stage after just seven minutes. After three more attempts to resume the show, its canceled by police, with only six songs having been played. 1970: ABBA, then known as the Festfolk Quartet, play their first-ever concert at a Gothenburg, Sweden restaurant. 1971: Allman Brothers Band guitarist Duane Allman is laid to rest. The group, plus Dr. John and Bonnie Bramlett, perform at the service. Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident three days earlier. 1975: Elton John’s “Island Girl” tops the U.S. pop chart. 1975: The original, seven minute version of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” is released in the U.K. A shorter version is subsequently issued. 1975: Due to lead singer Karen Carpenters struggle with anorexia, the Carpenters are forced to cancel their upcoming European tour. 1976: “Rock And Roll Over” is released. The KISS album goes platinum 1979: Bob Dylan debuts the songs from his new album, a Christian polemic called Slow Train Coming, on the first night of his new tour in San Francisco, CA. A shocked audience boos the new material throughout the set. 1991: After having a cancerous lung removed, former Temptation Eddie Kendricks is released from an Atlanta hospital. 2000: The Beatles “1” tops the U.S. album chart. Even though the songs on this collection of 27 former #1 hits are over 30 years old, The Beatles once again demonstrate their lasting appeal. 2003: Guitarist Carlos Santana stops his Hong Kong concert to deliver an anti-war message regarding the war in Iraq. Santana asks the crowd for 30 seconds of silence to condemn President Bushs foreign policy. 2005: Ozzy Osbournes Under Covers CD, which originally was available in his Prince Of Darkness box set, gets re-released on its own. The 13-track DualDisc has additional tracks not used in the box set. The DVD features footage spanning Ozzys career along with a video of Osbournes version of John Lennons In My Life. Theres even a 30-minute film titled Dinner With Ozzy and Friends with appearances by Motörheads Lemmy Kilmister and Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward. So you HAVE to get it. 2005: AC/DC: Two Sides To Every Glory is published. The book, written by Paul Stenning, tracks the group’s rise from the Australian pub circuit through ‘05. The tome has rare photos and additional information on original vocalist Bon Scott’s death. 2006: Elton John supports a Wisconsin group that opposes a ballot measure that would ban gay marriage in the state. He waives his usual $20,000 fee allowing Fair Wisconsin to use Dont Let the Sun Go Down On Me in a campaign ad. Later, during a concert appearance in Uniondale, NY, John airs his grievances about the lack of promotion his label providing (or not providing) for The Captain & the Kid album. This album has gotten some of the best reviews of my career, and my record company has done absolutely nothing, John tells the audience. Theyre useless. Heres a message to Universal Records: Please drop me. 2012: Jimi Hendrix - The Ultimate Lyric Book is in bookstores. Compiled by the guitarist’s stepsister, Janie L. Hendrix, the book contains numerous handwritten lyrics as well as Hendrix photos to accompany every song.
