Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, October 25th: 1944: Yes front-man, Jon Anderson, is born. 1948: Judas Priest guitarist (and occasional keyboard player) Glenn Tipton roars into the world. He’s from Blackheath, England. 1955: Guitarist-songwriter, Matthias Jabs (The Scorpions), is born. 1960: A 17-year-old art student named Keith Richards runs into his old schoolmate, an economics student named Mick Jagger, at a train station in London. Richards notices the R&B albums under Jaggers arm, and before long the two form their first group -- Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. 1962: The Beatles give their first-ever radio interview, on Radio Clatterbridge, a closed-circuit radio station serving Cleaver and Clatterbridge Hospitals in Wirral, near Liverpool. Paul is quoted as saying John is, in fact, the leader of the group. 1963: The British music industry claims The Beatles’ “She Loves You” is the most broadcast song of the year. 1964: The Rolling Stones make their US television debut when they appear on CBSs Ed Sullivan Show. After screaming fans practically tear the studio seats apart, Sullivan declares to reporters: I promise you theyll never be back on our show. It took me 17 years to build this up, Im not going to have it destroyed in a matter of weeks. We wont book any more rock n roll groups. Frankly, I didnt see the group until the day before the broadcast. I was shocked when I saw them. The group returns to the program five times. 1968: The New Yardbirds, soon to be known as Led Zeppelin, make their live concert debut at Englands Surrey University, described on the poster as the first big dance of the term. 1971: Just four days before guitarist Duane Allman’s death “The Allman Brothers Band Live at the Fillmore East” earns a gold record. 1986: I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On (Robert Palmer) gets to #4 on the Hot 100. 1989: The Fire and the Fury Tour with guitarists Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan starts in Minneapolis. 1991: Fillmore West/East founder and concert promoter Bill Graham dies in a helicopter crash. 1995: Cliff Richard is knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, the very first native rock star to receive the honor. 1997: Johnny Cash reaches over to pick up a dropped guitar pick at todays concert in Flint, MI and falls over on stage; apologizing, he reveals to the audience that he is in the early stages of Parkinsons Disease. The crowd, thinking Cash is joking, laughs at the comment. 2004: Ozzy Osbourne and his wife/manager, Sharon host a MTV reality series, Battle for Ozzfest. Not hard to figure out the format: Eight up-and-coming bands compete for a chance to perform at next year`s Ozzfest. It’s Survivor on a Rock N’ Roll scale. 2004: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant’s No Quarter: Unledded DVD premieres in 44 Regal Entertainment Group movie theaters on the same day it’s released. The DVD, with performances filmed in Morocco, Wales and London and a 13-minute interview with Page and Plant, documents a 1994 tour as they perform reworked, acoustic-based versions of several Zeppelin songs. 2004: Def Leppard’s career encapsulating CD, Super Vault, is released in Europe. It`s a reworked version of their `95 release Vault” with the addition of the Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset.” A companion DVD is issued the following day. 2005: Rockin The Joint is a live DualDisc from Aerosmith. The January 02 Vegas show at the Hard Rock Hotel, includes Draw The Line and Walk This Way as well as behind-the-scene clips. The CD side features 11 songs including six tunes from Areosmith’s 75 classic Toys in the Attic. Also, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler tapes a Santana video in Boston. How did this happen? Originally, Puddle Of Mudd vocalist Wes Scantlin sang Just Feel Better for the “All That I Am” album but Santana opted for Tylers version. Both singers were incredible, but Steven took it to a supernatural level, says the guitarist. 2006: Forbess sixth annual Top-Earning Dead Celebrities list reports that Elvis Presleys estate comes in second (beaten out by Nirvanas Kurt Cobain). Also in the top twenty: John Lennon, Johnny Cash, George Harrison, Ray Charles, and Bob Marley. 2007: Governor Jon Corzine announces that Bruce Springsteen is one the 15 inaugural members of the New Jersey Fall of Fame. No kidding, there really is such a thing though there is no actual ‘Hall’. The Boss, Frank Sinatra and actress Meryl Streep are in the Arts & Entertainment category. The formal induction happens in ’08. 2008: AC/DC performs a final world tour dress rehearsal for 3,000 contest winners and invited guests at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The band plays a 13-song set that includes Back In Black and You Shook Me All Night Long, plus a couple songs from ‘08’s Black Ice. 2011: KISS guitarist Paul Stanley undergoes vocal cord surgery to correct recurring vocal cord issues, according to CNN. I hold myself to a higher standard than others do, says Stanley. With that in mind, I wanted to remedy a few minor issues that come with 40 years of preaching Rock n Roll. 2012: The Rolling Stones play their first show in five years at a Paris club. The 12 song warm-up for planned concerts at larger venues later in the year opens with “Route 66” and closes with “Brown Sugar.” Yes, their latest single “Doom And Gloom,” Its Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It), Start Me Up and “Jumpin Jack Flash are on the set list.
