Today is Autism awareness day...it is not a celebration....yes I love my son, yes he is bright and loving and all that other great stuff. But in honor of autism awareness I think that people should be AWARE of how autism affects his life. He is frequently over stimulated causing him to be hyperactive, if its too loud or there are too many people He screams. He is non- verbal and has difficulty communicating his needs and wants which leads to a melt down.he has difficulty reading emotions and isnt sure if someone is happy, sad or mad. He has a hard time making friends and is usually too rough or inappropriate. Yes he looks normal So people are quick to judge him as an unruly child wherever I go. I as his mother am sick or the stares and judgment and constant need to explain his behavior. Please keep this in mind the next time you see a child in public acting out as you never know the situation. Please have compassion for those around you.
