Today is CyberMonday, the web’s version of Black Friday — the day we’re supposed to get the very best deals on everything we wish to buy for our friends and ourselves for the holidays. But there’s likely a full month of sales coming. So if you shop online, we remind you to be careful. Here are a few things to think about. • If you have to create an account to buy something, be sure to write down your username and password — but don’t write this into a non-passworded document on your computer. Write it on paper and keep it away from your computer. Or store it in a secure password computer program such as 1Password. • Don’t give out more information than you must. There is typically no need to provide full profile information. • Pay attention to the forms you fill out. Look for check boxes that sign you onto promotional emails. If you really want those emails, do yourself a favor and make a note that you subscribed. That helps you to know which emails you’ve asked for and can safely unsubscribe from to help figure out which emails are merely phishing expeditions or scams. • Consider getting temporary credit card numbers. Citibank offers them free and other companies may, too.
