Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. On January 27 1945 the 322nd Rifle Division of the Russian Army arrived at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. They found around 7,500 prisoners and about 600 corpses had been left behind. 58000 detainees had already been evacuated. Among the items found by the Soviet soldiers were 370,000 mens suits, 837,000 womens garments, and 7.7 tonnes (8.5 short tons) of human hair. We must also go beyond remembrance, and make sure that new generations know this history. We must apply the lessons of the Holocaust to today’s world. And we must do our utmost so that all peoples may enjoy the protection and rights for which the United Nations stands. — Message by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for the second observance of the Holocaust Victims Memorial Day.
