Today is International Ataxia Awareness Day. It is very easy to dwell on all the challenges and loss my inherited spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) has caused over the years. It is also easy to focus on the aspect that SCA is a progressive neurological condition with no treatment or cure at this point. However, I would like to share with you all I have gained because of this condition. I started having symptoms by age 5 but my weird symptoms remained a mystery until a year ago. What Ataxia has given me: • Resiliency When you fall; you pick yourself up and keep going • Persistence If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again • Countless opportunities to laugh at myself • Strength Through my weakest times; I find my strength within • Courage • Gratitude There are so many wonderful things in my life to be thankful for • Amazing people into my life. • A strong sense of who I am • Opportunities to be mindful • Determination Never give up • Security in the knowledge that I am surrounded by love and supported by my family and friends. • The awareness that happiness is a choice and I choose happiness • Spiritual growth • Membership to the fabulously inspiring Ataxia community • Hope Research is happening right now and knowledge is growing…
