Today is International Lefthanders Day, so here are 3 facts about lefthandedness, only two of which are true, and its up to you to Find the Factoid! 1) The Latin adjective sinister means left as well as unlucky, which could explain why lefties, also called sinistrals, have been ostracized at various times and places throughout history for being evil (although some of us definitely are! Muahahahaha!). 2) The term Southpaw originates from the fact that in the early days of Major League Baseball, baseball diamonds were oriented in such a way that home plate was pointed West, so as to maximize playing time in the days before stadium lighting. Therefore, when a lefty pitcher stood facing home plate, his left arm was on his South side, and the term southpaw was born. 3) Although footedness is less dominant in humans (only about 1/2 of lefthanders consider themselves left-footed), boardsports such as surfing and skateboarding still show a slight bias, in that they call athletes who choose to lead with their right foot goofy-footed, since it is the back leg that supposedly provides power and maneuverability and it is less common than the left-foot-front stance.
