Today is Mikhail Bakunins 200th birthday. He was an early leading thinker in anarchism, but I dont expect to see many celebrations of his life today, because he was also an antisemitic dick. . When I was younger, I used to be a Leninist, and it felt like any criticism of Lenin meant you were attacking everything the bloke ever did and that other Leninists had added you to their imaginary Gulag list (dont lie, you have one). But, Ive yet to meet an anarchist who expressed more than a begrudging recognition of Bakunin and Proudhons (an antisemite and misogynist) influence on early anarchism. I guess thats the benefit of not naming your ideology after a fallible person. Its nice to be able to call your political forefathers out for the shitty views they held, because both of them were colossal cocks. .
