Today is N95 Day (September 5th), a NIOSH holiday about N95 filtering facepiece respirators. This clip is from the Australian Government Department of Health and Aging’s DVD Pandemic Influenza Preparedness, Safe Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In Australia and Europe, what we call N95 respirators are called P2 respirators. N95 respirators are very commonly used in healthcare to protect workers from airborne infectious diseases, such as Tb. There is much confusion and misinformation from healthcare agencies and facilities about what is the proper protection for healthcare workers to prevent exposure to the current H1N1 or swine flu outbreak. Surgical or procedures masks commonly used in healthcare will not protect against inhaling the airborne droplets. Sadly, healthcare workers worldwide are often not getting the protection they need from airborne disease. Wearing N95 respirators should be only one element of workers and health care organizations infection control strategies. This clip shows the basics of selecting a proper respirator and the gives an introduction to the important 20 minute fit testing procedure to insure the respirator fits properly.
