Today is Saragarhi Day!!!..Battle fought on 12 Sep 1897 A day commemorated by 4 Sikh Regiment(then 36 Sikh Regiment) and Indian Army to honor the 21 gallant men who fought and defended the signalling post of Saragarhi against 10,000 Pashtun fighters The 21 Sikh men, was commanded by Havildar Ishar Singh. When they realised that their detachment couldnt be reinforced with more troops, they decided to fight against Afghan tribes to the last man to the last round. Its believed that the ratio was 20:1, where all 21 Sikh fighters fought against 20 odd Afghan tribesman at a time. Once the battle was over, and when the relief party reached the scene of battle, they saw 600+ bodies, which included all 21 Sikh men. Due to the fierce resistance of these Sikh fighters, the Afghan tribesman had to burn some of these men alive to curb their rage. Though, the post of Saragarhi was finally over-run, but Afghans had to retreat, as reinforcement of 36 Sikh Regiment had arrived to defend Fort Gullistan, where they were heading to on 13th and 14th September 1897. It is believed, that British Parliament gave a standing ovation to honour bravery of these men.And all 21 men were awarded with the highest gallantry medal Indian Order of Merit posthumously, which is equivalent to Param Vir Chakra today. Even, UNESCO has considered the Battle of Saragarhi as one of the history greatest last man standing battles.
