Today is Saturday, August 30, 2014 Today in Texas History 1836 - Houston was founded on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. 1893 - Amarillo was selected as the seat of Potter County. In 1893, the second location for Amarillo was selected to the east. 1900 - The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was first observed 125 northwest of Martinique. 1901 - The El Paso Electric Railway Company took over as the supplier of electricity for large segments of the Southwest. The previous supplier was Brush Electric Light Company. 1956 - In Mansfield, TX, a mob surrounded Mansfield High School to prevent the enrollment of three African-American students. Texas Governor Allan Shivers authorized the stutdents to be transferred to Fort Worth. The Mansfield school district finally desegregated in 1965. (Mansfield School Desegregation Incident) 1969 - The 3-day Texas International Pop Festival opened at the Dallas International Motor Speedway. The three day event included 23 acts.
