Today is Siebenschlafertag (“Seven Sleepers Day”) in Germany and Unikeonpaiva (“National Sleepyhead Day”) in Finland. The German holiday is a sort of predictor of what the weather will be like in the next seven weeks - like our Groundhog Day or St. Swithin’s Day in England. In Finland on this day the last person in a household is awoken by either having water thrown on them or they themselves being thrown into the sea. Had I grown up in Finland I would have had have spent too many wet and grumpy June 27ths.
