Today is Susan and my marriageaversay! I have been married to the same woman for 19 yrs today. Wait. That might have sounded like I was complaining. Rest assured I am not! Today marks the end of our teenage years of marriage and the beginning of our twenty-something years. I have always looked at our marriage as a living person. In our first few years we had to learn to crawl before we could walk. We had to learn to communicate our needs to each other. If our marriage wasnt intentionally fed healthy things then it wouldve become sick or couldve even died. There was a co-dependence that existed between us as we explored this world together. As we entered the pre-teen years there was a time of volatility and attitude. Everything was extreme: the highs were really high and the lows were really low. Growing through discipline was the journey we lived daily as we explored more independence of a healthy self. The teen years have brought with it far better communication, more meaningful experiences, and a deeper level of relationship. This is a direct result of trying our best to foster a healthy marriage--not perfect, but healthy. We are able to see our history together though eyes that see the good and the bad for what they both are, a normal part of life being married. We see now our co-dependence is centered on celebrating each others independence. Seeing Susan healthy is where I find some of my favorite joys in life. As I take stock of our 19 years of marriage today, I am keenly aware that I am a better person because of Susan. Her unfailing love, support, compassion, encouragement, hope, laughter at my silliness, applauding my love for culture, resolve in my depression, and never ending grace has literally been a gift of life to me. Simply stated, but profoundly true; I wouldnt have made it thus far if it wasnt for her. So, to say thanks! seems petty. To say I love you! seems trivial. Although I mean them both dearly. I would simply say, as we step towards our 20th year of marriage, the last 20 years have been truly amazing! I cant wait to see what the next 20 years will bring together, my love!!! Susan, I love you, no matter what, always and forever!
