Today is Tuesday, October 1, 2013 Today in Texas History 1835 - Texan volunteers from the Gonzales area crossed the Guadalupe and moved upriver toward the camp of Francisco de Castañeda. The next morning they attacked the Mexicans and Castañeda ordered his men to fall back. (Battle of Gonzales) 1837 - In Houston, John P. Borden opened the General Land Office. He transferred the office to Austin in 1839. 1849 - The first inmates arrived at the site of the Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville. They were housed in temporary structures until the permanent structures were complete. 1885 - Alfred H. Belo launched The Dallas Morning News. 1942 - The Chisos Mining Company filed for bankruptcy. The mine was a major quicksilver producer at Terlingua, Brewster County. 1944 - The Kenedy Alien Detention Camp near Kenedy, Texas, was converted to a prisoner of war camp.
