Today is World Diabetes Day - a day to recognise and increase awareness of this debilitating disease in humans. Diabetes can affect our pets as well, and is actually very commonly diagnosed. Dogs tend to get a Type 1 Diabetes syndrome which renders them unable to produce insulin within their pancreas. Cats more commonly get a Type 2 diabetes - related to obesity, which then leads to insulin resistance and fatigue of the pancreas. In both species the clinical signs include weight loss in the face of an increased or steady appetite, increased drinking, increased urination. In advanced cases pets can be very unwell and showing vomiting or diarrhoea or collapse. Diabetes is a manageable condition in our pets, best identified early in the course of the disease. If you have any concerns about diabetes in your pet call us to book an appointment with a vet!!
