Today is World Mental Health Day and my biomed loves and future - TopicsExpress

Today is World Mental Health Day and my biomed loves and future doctor colleagues Shian-Li Wong & Ritu Chaurasia have nominated me to share with you how I keep my grass green. Its a great time to talk about mental health, to encourage each other to be aware of it and to decrease the stigma associated with it. I thought I would share with you the photo I took on the day I crashed my bike and almost ended up in a shallow creek. It was two days after crashing my car and part of one of the worst weeks of my life. This week has been just as testing, with my end of year exams looming, not getting enough sleep and being tired at hospital for the whole week, all whilst dealing with politics related to an event commitment Id joined for the love of the event. There are multiple ways that I deal with these challenges. I like to stay active and play sports I enjoy, which was formerly going to the snow and snowboarding (sometimes in ridiculous costumes) but now the snow is gone :(. My current sport that I like is to go for rides on my bike as I find it clears my head and allows me to direct my frustration into useful kinetic energy. And next week Ill be participating in the BUPA Around the Bay challenge. I also wouldnt be able to deal with these challenges without the support of my friends and loved ones. Having someone to complain to is great, having multiple people to complain to is amazing. The advice and perspective I gain from everyone is extremely valuable and helps me pick myself up and become a better and stronger person. Lastly, dont underestimate the power of seeking outside help. Talking to someone who has an unbiased perspective such as a colleague, mentor, counsellor or psychologist really helps point you in the right direction - even if they are restating what you already know and have been told. This initiative by Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) in light of Mental Health Week is really worthwhile! I recommend you check out the Keeping Your Grass Greener guide at amsa.co/KeepingYGG for more information and resources. Also check out the Q&A panel on Monday which was also talking about Mental Health as part of their campaign. Bonnie Ho, William Ho, Daniel Saitta, Kasun Wickramarachchi, Deanne Vagg and Prerna Diksha, I would like to know how you keep your grass green!
