Today is a big day in jazz history. On September 23, 1926 Saxophonist/composer John Coltrane born in Hamlet, NC. And four years later in 1930 Pianist/vocalist arranger Ray Charles born in Albany, GA. Both were Giants in jazz history. Trane was best known for his alto and soprano saxophone pieces. He played with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk before organizing his own groups. . He was recognized for his sheets of sound, a stark antithesis to Miles Davis melancholy, lyrical version on Porgy and Bess, and use of offbeat pedal points and augmented chords. My favorite has always been Blues to Elvin, on the Coltrane Plays the Blues album. Dedicated to his long time friend drummer Elvin Jones, performed here with McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin himself. Ill write something about brother Ray later. youtu.be/ABW6wkkdQXI
