Today is a day for remembering. Three hundred and forty three of New Yorks Bravest re-earned that title and lost their lives at the World Trade Center. Of that unbelievable number, I lost four friends: 1st Deputy Commissioner Bill Feehan, Assistant Chief Gerard Barbara, Battalion Chief Ray Downey and Captain Brian Hickey of Rescue Co. 4 who was also a colleague of mine on the Bethpage Fire Department. Three hundred and forty three firefighters were crushed to death along with 2263 police officers, emergency medical technicians and innocent civilians in the towers and on the ground. Two hundred and forty-six souls aboard four aircraft were also incinerated. What a horrible day of evil! Remember now the hundreds of firefighters and police officers who survived, but today are suffering horribly from emotional distress and debilitating respiratory injuries. As Mayor Giuliani said that night, the pain is indescribable (and) The number of casualties will be more than any of us can bear... The suffering still goes on today at many levels.
