Today is a milestone of sorts in our house. It was exactly one year ago today that Ryan was undergoing surgery for the second time to remove a brain tumor, which had grown back in only 4 months. As it was impossible to remove all of it, there was concern that we might soon find ourselves back in the same boat. The fact that he has now gone a whole year with no evidence that the tumor is coming back is a big cause for celebration! A year ago, he had also wanted to return to playing soccer. The day we learned that the tumor had returned and that he would need to undergo surgery again, was to be the day of his first soccer practice that spring. I think he was equally devastated by the realization he would not get to play soccer as he was about the surgery itself. I remember him questioning if he would ever get another soccer season or if he would just continue to find himself back in a hospital bed. Watching him finally get to play out on a soccer field last night had an extra special meaning for me.
