Today is a moment that I will always cherish. I am grateful for the influences in my life that allow me to hold such a position. I have been overwhelmed with the amount of well-wishes, comments, messages and emails. Shortly after being inaugurated, I will cast my first vote for the Speaker of the House. In November, I was present when Speaker John Boehner was the only name presented to the Republicans. Rep. Trey Gowdy was one of those who nominated the Mr. Boehner. This was a bit discouraging, in-part because I had promised to support Rep. Gowdy as an alternative to the current leadership. I have remained open to other candidates, hoping that a viable option would present their name for Speaker. Up until yesterday, there was discussion that a well-respected leader and a true conservativewould step forward. As of this morning, this particular Member has chosen against being a candidate. Last week, I heard from several constituents demanding that I vote for Rep. Trey Gowdy. On Saturday, I was told to vote for Rep. Ted Yoho. Then Sunday, I was told that if I love my country, I best cast my vote for Rep. Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert is a strong conservative and good man, I spent time talking with him. However, after several years in Congress, he was only able to garner a few votes two months ago in his bid for chairman of the Republican Study Committee. Being conservative is not enough. The position of Speaker requires a conservative set of principles but also the ability to lead – to build coalitions and provide vision. Men like Presidents Washington, Lincoln and Reagan had the ability to be both. After much prayer and personal deliberation, I – along with the most of the conservatives in our freshmen class – will be voting to re-elect Speaker John Boehner. Im well aware that I will disappoint some of my supporters. However, I am at peace knowing that my record on legislation and conservative policies will stand for itself. I would have hoped that everyone would have permitted me time to observe my votes on upcoming legislation; however, I believe in time all will see what most already know of my character. Yesterday, Members of the 114th Freshmen Class asked me lead a prayer at the conclusion of a meeting. Standing there, with heads bowed, I was struck by how many well-intentioned Members of Congress have sought the Lord’s wisdom before; past Freshman, eager to make their mark. As I came to the end of the prayer I settled for a few moments on the idea of wisdom and understanding. Good intentions are not enough. Wisdom is required. Understanding of the challenges is necessary to find solutions. I was reminded of a quote, “The greatest dangers to Liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal; well-meaning but without understanding.” I close with a grateful heart and pledge to serve to my utmost capacity.
