Today is a special day with lots of history, emotions and feelings. While the world and the nation remembers Mahtama Gandhi, the father of the nation on his birth anniversary the other quiet legend Lal Bahadaur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of the country - born on the same day as the Mahatma - largely goes unnoticed. Closer home, today is also the 20th anniversary of the Rampur Tiraha Kand where several statehood activists demanding the creation of our beloved Uttarakhand lost their lives. Birth, death and sacrifice are the overriding emotions of these events. Navratri brings a special fervour. It is a festival of spirituality, of giving and of remembering. Today is the auspcious Ashtami and millions of households across the nation and the world are sharing and seeking prayers based on their faith and religion. Today is also special because of the clarion call given by the Prime Minister for a clean, Swachh Bharat. I welcome the initiative and the symbolism with the hope that this turns out to be something bigger. Day to day simple habits need to improve. Civility and concern for others beyond self needs to go up. Let us all then lend a hand and do our bit for a cleaner and healthier nation. Dusshera, Durga Puja and Bakri Id are all round the corner.
