Today is a very Special Day indeed :) ... it would have been my Grand~Mas Adelaide Della Nelson ~ Sheffields birthday. She was born on the 13th of July 1887, and she passed away on the 1st of January 1962 on very old Winters day at the age of 75. My Grandpa, who was 80 when he was reunited with my Grand~Ma, the love of his life, as he referred to her as his Lady on the 23rd of January 1962 ... he died of a broken heart so, the Dr. said. They could not be separated in life! No doubt about it, we were blessed with the most amazing Grandparents on earth! Ma was barely 5 foot tall (like her Mom was). She had a heart made of Gold ... of this I am certain! She was always full of faith, love, and kindness. She adored all of their 6 children, their spouses, and all of their 23 Grandchildren. I would spend the night with my Grandparents on occasion, and I loved sleeping next to my Grand~Ma as a child during the Winter. Ma always wore a flannel nightgown ... I can still remember her scent, and her arthritic hand with the softest skin always warm to touch on the cheek of my face. I would ask her to tell me stories about her childhood, growing up on their Family Farm which was located in The Swamp section of The Forks ... as I would drift of to the land of nod. I recall one so vividly about she, and her twin sister, Aunt Rose, traveling with their Dad, Henry... downtown after dark in their horse drawn wagon when a Bear, a BIG BEAR crossed the dirt road near Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, yes, it crossed right in front of their wagon, and spooked the horses which caused them to rear upward! Their wagon had lanterns attached to the sides. Thank God they werent injured. During the Summer Thunder Storms rolling over the Pulp Mill Dam, just up the road, my Grand~Ma would say Cha~bug dont be afraid, that noise is only Gods Angels moving the furniture about in Heaven. That story was etched in mind. :) During Thunder Storms I often think of her telling me that ... when I am not hiding in our closet with Holy Water :) lol ... Ma was an awesome cook, and baker by scratch ... no measuring spoons, nor cups for her ... it was a pinch of this, or a dash or two of that, with a hand full of flour, or sugar whatever it was she was making turned out perfect every time! (Y) ;) She crotched doilies, and they were beautiful. She would do a free hand sewing, and needle point designs onto their pillow cases ... so pretty! She taught me much as a child. Ma was so talented! She was an immaculate house keeper ... pretty much a perfectionist at all she did. She and my Grandpa Sheffield liked playing Canasta (Card Game) or Pollyanna (Board Game) ... prior to the games of Pollyanna, Ma always chose the Blue Pegs while Puppy always chose the Yellow Pegs of the game ... I would select Green, of course ;) If she knew I was coming in advance she would bake a fresh blueberry pie, and coleslaw ... my favorites, and my Grandpas as well! Their favorite TV program was Gun Smoke starring James Arness. Ma would spend two days, Friday and Saturday preparing for their Families Sunday Dinner at their home on Rome Street where all their children would gather after Mass. ... Her homemade chicken and dumplings were beyond a description! Scrumptious, more like plate licking good (Y) and her homemade Canadian Split Pea Soup with Ham and her homemade rolls ... oh my, heavenly. Then, there was her Canadian Baked Beans with Salt Pork and Born Sugar and homemade bread with real butter of course! No one, but no one could cook like my Grand~ Ma. I can still see them both, Ma and Puppy, in the wind mills of my mind rocking in their chairs in their kitchen while saying their morning rosary. I will forever be eternally grateful to God almighty for the most amazing Grandparents one could ever have. I know this, Love Never Dies ~ It Is Endless
