Today is an important day for America! I pray for safety. I also ask that you take time out of your day to remember the victims of both 9/11 attacks. Four months after 9/11 I left for basic training. I will one day tell my grand kids about the experience. Everybody in my basic training course had the attack fresh in our minds. People joined the army for different reasons. But some joined just because of 9/11. We had this one guy, he graduated from Harvard and had a six figure income, joined the reserves because he wanted to do his part for his country. There was this rich kid in my class, graduated from the university of Miami, joined because he didnt want a pampered life. He wanted to earn his way and not have his parents give him everything. There was this black guy from the streets of Chicago who told me that he joined because he simply wanted to leave the ghetto. I know that guys like Michael Moore exploit people like him. They try to make them sound like victims. But this young man held his head high. The day that he graduated AIT his mama, with tears in her eyes, hugged him and held him for a long time. You could feel the pride in the air. He was proud of himself for getting through basic and AIT and she was proud that she raised a good man, all by herself, in the heart of an environment with zero opportunity. This man was not a victim in my opinion. There was also this Native American girl in my AIT. I use to hoop a lot and she use to meet me at the basketball courts and shoot around with me. She was a Navajo and use to tell me about life in the reservation with her family. I also knew this African American lesbian. She use to tell me that I had no butt. When I would stand in front of her in formation, I use to pull my blouse up so she could get a good view. She would laugh and say, You have no butt. The day we graduated her super attractive girl friend showed up. She was surrounded by all these buff guys, but all she wanted was her girl from the Bronx. One of my best friends, and sadly I lost touch with him, was from Equador. I use to make fun of him because he didnt shine his boots one day and the drill SGT yelled, dont they have boot Polish in Equador? Oddly the only guy who I have talked to recently was one of my drill SGTs. I ran into him in Afghanistan. He looked just like Method Man and use to scare the crap out of people. I had a lot of laughs with him when I saw him. That was my basic and AIT class! Even though we were all there for different reasons, we were super patriotic! We were America! And we were ready to take it to the terrorists for what they had done to us!
