Today is bittersweet for me. Today my J-baby turns 13 years old. Hes quite a diverse young man. Although highly intelligent hes a little naive and lacks common sense at times. What bothers me most is that hes a statistic in the eyes of the school and legal systems. I find comfort in the same God that kept me will keep him. As a mother raising a young black male in the city of New Orleans the odds are against him but if God be for you who can be against you. They dont always follow 3-strike laws with us. They offer mandatory minimums for certain crimes. While I know he isnt the type of child to get into trouble. Trouble is always ever present. No weaponry formed against him shall prosper. It use to be innocent until proven guilty but it seems your guilty until proven innocent. It cost money to do so. J is surrounded by loving parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles, god parents, siblings & cousins and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ. It still takes a village to raise a child. However, on this day we will celebrate with him, talk to him, and let him know the ramifications and consequences of certain actions. No longer will be looked at as a baby or child. He is now a young man closer to being a man. May The Lord bless him and continue to direct his path.
