Today is my 33rd birthday. Ive been waiting since 1995 to see how the Smashing Pumpkins song, Thirty-Three, would relate to how I feel at this age. Its taken me until now to really understand the songs sentiment - the feeling of hope you have when youre about to embark on a new chapter later in life, yet that hopefulness is tethered by the experiences youve had time to accrue. The emotion is not the sweeping overture you expect happiness to be when youre in your teens and twenties, but rather a more mature sense of peace and gratitude as you look back at your life thus far, while at the same time looking forward with a willingness to embrace the future, albeit, less naively. Ive always loved the line, Ill make the effort / Love can last forever. It lands so perfectly at a moment in the song when the musical arrangement and the melody sound brave and optimistic. Really, I cant think of a more moving expression what Ive been feeling lately than that little spot of magic where lyrics, melody, and the performance come together to illustrate a mood. Thank you, Billy Corgan. I cant say I know exactly where Im going from here on out, but I have a sense of certainty and hope that makes me put one foot in front of the other for another day because I live for the cause of giving love on this earth above all of other things. Thanks to all who have blessed my life with their love. Im a lucky guy. youtu.be/AYSbztCCTlA
