Today is my day to post for discussion. I probably should have - TopicsExpress

Today is my day to post for discussion. I probably should have done this before class, but we havent even started talking about the book yet, so I think my timing isn’t a huge issue. Anyway, my discussion post is going to focus on the title of the book since we havent started any class discussion, and I dont want to risk being a spoiler. Plus I think the title of the book can tell us something about the author’s purpose for writing the novel. Why do you think the Keilson chose the title, Comedy in a minor Key if the book has nothing to do with comedy? During my reading I tried find moments of humor or comic relief in novel. I believe the title is related to the idea of finding the silver lining. For example, the first chapter starts off talking about the death of Nico, but the other characters do not express a great deal of emotion over Nicos death. Instead the characters start to plan how they are going to handle the dead body. To me the discussion of how to handle Nicos dead body works as a form comic relief in the book because Marie and Wim try to properly handle Nicos body by following Jewish tradition. However, Marie and Wim are not totally sure of how to follow the Jewish traditions regarding death. The comic relief is minor because Marie and Wims gesture show that Marie and Wim are good people with good intentions. But their good intentions do not give them the ability to successfully give Nico a proper Jewish funeral. The failure or possible ignorance of Marie and Wim give the readers something to laugh at because it can be funny to see people attempt something and be stopped by their own ignorance or other limitations. Or maybe Im the only one that does that? My point is in moments where comedy can be difficult to find, it is the little things that people have to look to for a laugh. Like laughing at our own shortcomings or struggles. I think the title of the book highlights that fact, comedy can be found in almost every situation, but it wont always be the dominant force in any given situation. Thats my two cents anyway, what do you all think? Why title the book, Comedy in a minor key?
