Today is my wife’s birthday. When I dated her I would take her home to the Bronx late at night. Then I would take the Lexington Avenue subway to Grand Central and change to the Main Street Flushing line to the last stop. Instead of waiting for the bus to Bayside at the end of Queens where I lived at the time, I walked through the night until it was almost dawn, my mind filled with dreams. I would think of W. B Yeatss Poem, He wishes for the Cloths of Heaven “Had I the heavens embroidered cloths Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. Usually about half an hour before the sunrise the birds in the trees would begin to sing to greet the rising sun. It was marvelous to hear such music before sunrise. We will be married 51 years this coming September. I am 78 on this day of her birthday and I still have my dreams.
