Today is the 125th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1889, one of the deadliest disasters in U.S. history. This flood, caused by the collapse of a private dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, claimed the lives of 2,209 people, swept away entire communities, nearly 100 families, 1,600 homes, and even locomotives. But this tragedy was not entirely in vain, as it helped give rise to the American Red Cross. We now know the vital role that disaster relief can play for families and struggling Americans — in flood-prone Johnstown and throughout our nation. As your voice in Congress, I will support disaster relief as a middle-class value — and in honor of the lives lost in Western PA more than a century ago.
