Today is the 30th Anniversary of the George Brett Pine tar game. - TopicsExpress

Today is the 30th Anniversary of the George Brett Pine tar game. That game was finally resumed on August 18 over the strenuous objections of the Yankees. Brett had hit a home run in the top of the 9th with 2 outs to put the Royals ahead and was subsequently called out (game over) after Yankee manager Billy Martin pointed out that Brett had pine tar farther up his bat than permitted. American League President Lee McPhail restored the home run pointing out that the pine tar rule was in place because it caused too many baseballs to be replace and that it had no effect on the play. When the game resumed an oddity occurred. Left hand throwing Don Mattingly played 2nd base for 1 out.
