Today is the 31st anniversary of the death of Humberto Cardinal - TopicsExpress

Today is the 31st anniversary of the death of Humberto Cardinal Medeiros, a priest of the Diocese of Fall River who became Bishop of Brownsville (1966-1970) and Archbishop of Boston (1970-1983). For the first 13 years of my life, growing up in the Archdiocese of Boston, we prayed for Humberto our Bishop every Mass in the Eucharistic prayer. When I became a seminarian, he was a point of contact and I began to visit regularly his plot in St. Patricks Cemetery here in Fall River, where he chose to be buried with his parents rather than in the episcopal crypt at Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston. There one will always find a candle burning and most often fresh flowers from all those who remember him as a holy pastor of St. Michaels in Fall River and as the Archbishop of Boston during tumultuous times socially and ecclesiastically. Below are photos I took of his grave this morning. At his funeral, Bishop Larry Riley preached, I am absolutely convinced that his death means that a genuine saint has passed from our midst. Cardinal Medeiros was for all of us a model of love and concern toward all, … but especially toward the poor and the down-trodden, the sick and the bereaved, the lonely and the forgotten. Cardinal William Baum read a message from Pope John Paul II calling him an ardent champion of all human life from conception to the grave. Today I visited his grave to pray for the repose of his soul and if, as we hope and as Bishop Riley predicted, he is now in Gods presence, I asked him to intercede in particular for the clergy of the Diocese of Fall River and the Archdiocese of Boston and particularly for Bishop Edgar da Cunha who will be installed as the Bishop of Fall River in a week. Requiescat in pace et Oret pro nobis!
