Today is the 55th anniversary of the first fight between Sugar Ray Robinson and Paul Pender. It was their first fight in the 1960´s. Pender won by a 15-round Split Decision. The scorecards were 148-142 Pender, 146-142 Pender, 147-138 Robinson. With the win, Pender was recognized (by the states of New York and Massachussets) as The World Middleweight Champion. Interesting: Pender celebrated his 50th Birthday on June 20, 1980, the same day in which Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran first fought each other. Duran won by a 15-round Unanimous Decision. The scorecards were 148-147, 146-144, 145-144. Thus, Duran caused Leonard´s first professional defeat and won the title of WBC World Welterweight Champion.
