Today is the Memorial of Saint Bridget, Religious. St. Bridget was born in 1303 in Uppland, Sweden. Her father was a knight, one of the wealthiest landowners in the region, and her mother was related to Swedish kings. Her education focused on religious piety and noble duties and at age 14, St. Bridget married Ulf Gudmarsson. They had 8 children, including the future St. Catherine of Sweden. St. Bridget’s wealth allowed her to be extremely generous. After her husband’s death, she formed the Order of the Most Holy Savior. She experienced many visions, which she wrote down and asked clerics to translate into Latin. They were widely read. To get her Order canonically approved, she traveled to Rome where she supported a return of the papacy from Avignon to Rome. St. Bridget was canonized in 1391 by Boniface IX and is patron saint of Sweden. Todays Gospel Reading: On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” Matthew 13:1-9
