Today is the beginning of the celebration of Tori no Ichi (the Rooster Days). Familiarly called Otorie-sama, Tori no ichi is a traditional festival dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867). It takes place in various temples and Shinto shrines in November, during the Rooster Days happening every 12 days. Its why this year the festival will be held on 10th and 22nd November. This festival is characterized by praying and buying kumade in small shops all around temples, in order to rake wealth and happiness. These Kumade are ornamented with “koban” (former coins), Otafuku mask (god of joy) and other traditional symbols, as Manekineko and Daruma of course! tokyo-smart/en/20-maneki-neko tokyo-smart/en/40-daruma They symbolically “rake” luck and prosperity.
