Today is the day we celebrate the birth, life and passing of one - TopicsExpress

Today is the day we celebrate the birth, life and passing of one of Americas greatest, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He taught us that hate can only be conquered through love. His practice and sermons on non-violence, though not ascribed to by all, was followed and believed to be the reason why so much was gained for our people. I have part of a speech/sermon below. If you can tell me the title of the passage it is from, the date and where it was given you will win a Kaya set (polish AND soap). Good luck! This is no time for romantic illusions and empty philosophical debates about freedom. This is a time for action. What is needed is a strategy for change, a tactical program that will bring the Negro into the mainstream of American life as quickly as possible. So far, this has only been offered by the nonviolent movement. Without recognizing this we will end up with solutions that dont solve, answers that dont answer, and explanations that dont explain. And so I say to you today that I still stand by nonviolence. And I am still convinced, and Im still convinced that it is the most potent weapon available to the Negro in his struggle for justice in this country. And the other thing is, Im concerned about a better world. Im concerned about justice; Im concerned about brotherhood; Im concerned about truth. And when one is concerned about that, he can never advocate violence. For through violence you may murder a murderer, but you cant murder murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you cant establish truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you cant murder hate through violence. Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that.
