Today is the day we remember all we are thankful for. I have enough to be thankful for that I should have started on November 1st like many of you did, but to be honest, there were a few times when I didn’t really feel thankful. One month ago, I had surgery to remove the brain tumor that was found in May. I have learned so much about what is important and what to be thankful for in the past few months. First of all, I am thankful for my family, especially Cory Knox and Liz Gerstenkorn. Cory has been a loving and supporting force in my life for a while, even more so now. He loves me when I’m silly and he loves me when I am sad. He is going to love me through this. Liz has been so strong and solid through all of the turmoil. I am proud to call her my daughter and even prouder when people call her my mini-me. I am also thankful for Liz’s boyfriend, Brett Van Schoyck and his family, as well as Liz’s church family. You have held her up when I couldn’t and I appreciate that more than you know. I am also thankful to my friends old and new. As the old song goes, make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold. If this is true, I am a very rich person. I don’t want to list names in case I forget anyone, but I am thankful for all the family and friends who have taken time out of their lives to be with us on this journey, whether you stayed with us, made a meal for us, sent a note or card or flowers, thought of us or prayed for us, I am truly amazed by the support of our family and friends. I am thankful for my employer and my co-workers, who are covering my caseload while I have been recovering from brain surgery. I will be back part-time on Monday! I also want to thank my boss and his wife, my friends, James Cook and Anne Cook, for their unwavering support and endless medical advice. I am also thankful for the Dr. Ryken and the staff at Iowa Spine and Brain Institute. They have gotten me this far in the journey. Their kindness is something I am grateful for. I am also thankful for Dr. Smith and Dr. Hohl at UIHC. I trust their medical expertise and experience will cure this cancer. Finally, I am thankful for my faith in God as I know He will see me through. Wishing blessings to all of you on Thanksgiving.
