Today is the feast day of the Our Lady of Pillar ... ... ... ... ... This place is to be my house, and this image and column shall be the title and altar of the temple you are to build...and the people of this land will honor greatly my SON, JESUS. - Our Lady to Saint James the Great The title Nuestra Señora Virgen del Pilar originated in Spain. Tradition relates that before Saint James the Great left the Holy Land for Spain, he bade goodbye to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Mary told him that he would perform many miracles many wonders in the country. Fired by the prophetic words of the Mother of God, he went about his missionary work with great zeal and enthusiasm. So it was an inspired James who landed in Spain to convert the pagan Spaniards in the early days of the Church. But after some time, the Apostle realized he was getting nowhere in his mission. His spirit weakened, his body became tired and his hopes dimmed. One night, while he and his followers camped along the banks of the river Ebro in Zaragoza, Spain, our Lady appeared to him to build a church right where she was standing and he would succeed in his mission. When she left, the jasper pillar on which she stood remained. Following her words, Saint James immediately constructed a church in her honor, and soon enough Spain was converted to Catholic faith. For more than nineteen hundred years now, the shrine in Zaragoza, the first Marian Shrine, has been a center of religious life in Spain. The jasper pillar of the apparition is the greatest relic of the Catholic Church in Spain. ... ... ... ... ... Pray for us, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Our Lady of Pillar, - that we may be made worthy of the promises of CHRIST our LORD. Amen.
