Today is the first day that I actually feel human again since my C5, C6 and C7 Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion surgery 6 days ago. All went well with the surgery, except that I dont do general anesthesia well. I end up vomiting for days after being anesthetized. I told the anesthesiologist about my issues with general and he said hed put something in my IV to help with that. But it didnt work... I wont elaborate on the aftermath of that.... Then, the other painful post surgery issue was the nerve coming out of the C7 foramina. I had a huge bone spur and narrowing at that area that had been compressing that nerve for a very long time. When the surgeon removed all that excess bone growth, he released the nerve. OH BOY! That shooting pain is enough to bring anyone to their knees. So basically, the neck and incision site has felt fine, but the intense nerve pain radiating across my shoulder down to my fingertips was absolutely brutal. The surgeon adjusted my Rxs by adding a nerve pain med. So Ive been pretty medicated and out of it trying to keep that nerve pain at bay. Yesterday I started backing off on the dosage of pain pills by cutting the dose in half. Today, feels like Ive rounded that corner and dont have to be in bed, drugged up, and sleeping. This morning, Im in the livingroom!! Hey, Its progress, and Ill take it! Im hoping to be able to back off the narcotics even more in the next couple of days. I cant say enough about my wonderful husband Dave Clausen, and all hes done to make sure Im as comfortable as possible. Youre an outstanding nurse darling!
