Today is the first day you can early vote. I was the first to drop a ballot in the box this morning at the Polk County Auditors office 120 Second Avenue, Downtown! Stop in and vote, its easy as pie. Check out the 5 reasons why it makes sense. Why all the sweat over early voting? Heres what strategists from both parties say: 1. Once someone has requested and voted a ballot, campaign operatives can move on and not spend any more time or money persuading him or her. That means no more phone calls, mail pieces or door knocks. It saves the campaign money, and it gives the voter a little peace and quiet. 2. Banking early votes means their candidate is more protected from late-breaking news or attacks from the opposite campaign. On the other hand, most down-ballot candidates hold off on the bulk of their advertising until the last minute, so campaign operatives worry early voters have less information on which person to pick. 3. With Iowa weather, one never knows what could happen. Iowa has had snowstorms in October and November that can affect turnout, so campaign operatives sleep better if they put votes away early. 4. One reason Democrats push so hard for early voting is that Iowa history shows their supporters tend to be less reliable in non presidential years than GOP voters. One reason the GOP lags in early voting is that more of its voters are traditionalists who prefer to vote in person, on the designated day. 5. Both parties are trying to net votes theyd otherwise miss.
