Today is the last day of Childhood Cancer awareness month. I am going to tell everyone about Brendans cancer and the effects of the cancer tonight Bren had a brain tumor called a Pineal Parenchymal Tumor. It is not a tumor on the brain. Its location is in the center of has brain between the 2 hemispheres. And Brens grew to be the size of a grapefruit. This cancerous tumor is not just a pediatric cancer. Anyone at any age can develop it. It is 1% of all brain tumors diagnosed. There has only been one study in the last 25 years. No one in the study lived the 20 years of the study. A man in his 40s lived the longest and he only lived 15 years after diagnosis. What does that mean for our Brendan? We do not know. Yes, Bren is tumor free! Meaning he has no solid mass there. We do have an area of concern. We have two opitions. We do a very invasive biopsy surgery to see if the area is cancer or scar tissue. Or scans every 3 months. We and his Doctor have chosen to do scans to watch for changes. Bren has been through enough for someone so young. Brendan has suffered many side effects from his cancer and the chemo he had. A brain tumor has one purpose. To destroy. He has some developmental delays, physical delays and hearing loss. He does not walk, talk or eat. He requires a lot of time. But I wouldnt have it any other way. Everything we do is for our 2 kids. Because I am home with the kids we have very little money. We gave up security when Bren got sick. I have read some posts from parents that seem to have given up and given in. I have Hope! I believe that there is a greater purpose. No matter the outcome. I know someone else has it worse then me.It is hard to keep your head up on the days you would like to just disappear. Should I be doing research and calling/ emailing hospitals to see what they have for treatments? Maybe. But I choose to have memories outside of the hospital. I love to watch my son getting stronger. We have come so far in such a short time. I am so proud of him! I am proud of both of my kids.
