Today is the one year anniversary of former IRS official Lois Lerner’s public disclosure that the IRS had engaged in the targeting of conservative groups and individuals. In the past 12 months, the House of Representatives has been tireless in our investigation to hold those responsible accountable and to restore the rights of all Americans to exercise their freedom of speech. This past week we passed a resolution holding Ms. Lerner in contempt of Congress. Additionally, we called on Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate this heinous abuse of American citizens. This is about protecting rights and restoring trust – both of which are invaluable to a functioning democracy.
