Today is the start of Doiyo o no ushi, the Dog Days of Summer, - TopicsExpress

Today is the start of Doiyo o no ushi, the Dog Days of Summer, here in Japan. On this day, it is traditional to eat unagi, grilled eel. Because of the oppressive heat and humidity that is summer here in Japan, many feel exhausted and wrung out. Eel is chock full of all sorts of vitamins, is healthy and energising, so by eating eel, everybody can genki naru, feel renewed and energised. The eel is split, gutted, skewered, and grilled, with a sort of teriyaki sauce, then served over hot rice. Eel has many fine bones, which are left intact; the grilling makes them edible, and so in addition to the other vitamins, theres a calcium boost as well. I like grilled eel. The first time I tasted it, many years ago, I thought I was eating thin sliced pork, and Im looking forward to Hubby bringing some home tonight! :-)
