Today, learn what it means to be rich towards God! Read todays devotion from The Word Speaks a daily devotional based on the sayings of Jesus. Foolish or Foolproof (Luke 12:20,21) He was wealthy and successful but had gone through several wives and none of his children talked to him anymore. He was rich and yet, oh, so poor. Jesus told a parable about a farmer who was blessed with a tremendous crop. He planned to retire and take life easy. Jesus said, “God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:20,21). A heart set on wealth has the potential to destroy earthly relationships; but it will most certainly decimate a relationship with God. What we value most highly in life will capture our hearts. If God isn’t our most valued possession, he will vacate the premises of our hearts. Do you see the foolishness? The man was penny wise, but lost his eternity with the Lord in heaven. What does it mean to be rich toward God? It starts with our deep awareness of personal sin in the light of God’s law. We hear not only the demands but also the threats of a righteous God. When the good news of Jesus’ payment reaches our hearts, we are filled with an inexpressible joy. Who could be more important to us than our Savior with his forgiveness and eternal life? Our thankfulness leads us to a life of devotion to him. We use our time, our abilities, our earthly possessions to glorify his name. In this way, you and I store up lives that are consecrated to Jesus. Prayer: Lord, you are my greatest treasure. Help me live in that perspective. Amen.
