Today marks a day in history for Saint John. After a riot at Market Square on July 23rd, 1914, the area was littered with overturned trolley cars and sparked negotiations between the city and its streetcar union. During July of 1914, the streetcar operators of Saint John formed into a local union, the company responded to this by firing the union president. The union responded by going on strike and in turn the company brought in "scabs" from Montreal to keep the cars in service. The public, who supported the union, refused to take the streetcars. As these events unfolded, a riot broke out at Market square, the Mayor read the riot act and called in the Royal Canadian Dragoons against the crowd. The end result was the public fighting off the Dragoons and over turning two streetcars.
