Today marks my dad’s birthday. He would’ve been 87, and I’m kind of amazed that he passed away 41 years ago. I still miss him, as he was really there for me when I was 12-13 years old and dealing with tough kids in sixth and seventh grade, showing me how to defend myself. I look at my boy, Paul, who’s now 13 and named after my dad; I hope I will be around for him and his brother, Andrew, for many, many years. Last Saturday, I sang at a memorial with The Blackhawk Chorus in Danville for a 95-year old man who just died, a Navy veteran who was stationed in Pearl Harbor on that fateful day December 7, 1941 (same day Paul was born), plus served in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars. I never knew him, as I just joined the chorus in January. As the color guard unveiled and folded up the American flag during the Taps ceremony, my mind harked back to my dad’s funeral in August 1973 when the same ritual was staged. He was a proud marine, a cop with the L.A. County Sheriff’s, a Southern gentleman; and I will always be proud to say he was my dad.
