Today marks the 234th anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain, fought on October 7, 1780 near the South Carolina/North Carolina border. It was the battle that turned the tide of the American Revolutionary War in the South, and led to the successful defeat of the British Army at Yorktown a year later. The battle was fought primarily between British Provincials and Loyalist Militiaman under Major Patrick Ferguson of the 71st Highlander Regiment of the British Southern Army and Continental militia from North and South Carolina and parts of modern-day Tennessee and Kentucky. In less than one hour the entire Loyalist force was virtually wiped out and Ferguson killed.
