Today marks the 250th anniversary of the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which was made to govern British settlers here on Mikinakong and ensure we behaved well among the various Indigenous nations we inhabited. The Proclamation was ratified the following year with the Treaty at Niagara. In the mid-1800s, when hordes of British/Irish/American immigrants started to squat, get uppity and overwhelm the Indigenous populations, things really went downhill. There is a lot of wisdom embodied in those ancient Treaties, they are our founding Constitutional documents, and it’s our responsibility as citizens to learn and honour them.
