Today marks the 700th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Bannockburn, in which the Scots drove out the English occupation forces on their border. There were no clear good guys and bad guys, but only people trying to survive in a world in which population pressures made bloody conflict among neighboring communities a constant reality. The legacy of Robert Bruces victory includes the Scottish monarchy, the legend of the spider, and the popular mens name Bruce. Looking at the re-enactments below will give anyone a sense of the utter brutality of the times.
